ABORTION — THE SILENT ISSUE

For a few short moments (during the vice-presidential candidates’ debate) the “silent issue of abortion” came up.  Pence reffered to the horrific aspects of late-term abortion, but unfortunately called it “partial birth abortion”–a procedure that has been banned since 2003.  It was an opportunity to correctly describe the current legal procedure as “Dismemberment Abortion (D&E)” and to explain how it involves shredding, in the womb, some 20,000 viable babies a year at their gestation ages of 22 to 28 weeks lmp–the second half of the second trimester.

For millions of young and middle-age women, abortion is the ONLY issue they care about, and it is the ONLY decision affecting their vote.  Abortion is the sole issue with Emily’s List members, NARAL, the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood and more.  It probably is the single significant issue that makes the difference between being registered as a Democrat versus a Republican voter.  And it is never discussed, debated, understood; particularly in terms of late second trimester abortion which is predominantly Dismemberment Abortion D&E (dilation and intra-uterine shredding and evacuation).  20,000 viable and potentially-viable babies are terminated each year by this quasi-surgical procedure.
